July art log

Achaius

This went so well last month I’m doing it again. Themes for the month: Markers and fish. Markers are fun; I get to play more with the marker set brother got me. Subject-wise I plan to focus on aquatic life generally, but the art server is super strict about topicality, so I gotta be careful what I post in #monthly-subject. Quick reference:

  • fish: sharks, rays, eels, seahorses
  • not fish: jellyfish, octopi, plesiosaurs

(6/2 note: I feel I’m not alone in this endeavor, since Zorrra just posted an octopus in #daily-sketch.)

Usual logging rules apply: I log all “finished pieces,” and if I don’t have any for a particular day, I’ll just log the best or most interesting art I did. Not an exhaustive list.

  • July 1: Various sketches in pen + crayon. Colorful fish, a snake & a snail, a tree.
  • July 1: Pen sketches of an important lore event: the mouse in the house who got caught and put in a bag, then escaped.
  • July 2: Various sketches in pen + crayon. Colorful fish (catfish/koi inspired); ducks, leaves, and bees about to get eaten by an enormous crocodile.
  • July 2-3: Various sketches in pen + crayon. A ghost saying "boo" to a firefly; a green dragon busting out of a purple truck (based on the heat-changing truck in the duplo box).
  • July 3: Marker + crayon drawing of cat-jellyfish in warm colors.
  • July 4: Quick referenced marker sketches of fish (marlin, gar, angelfish, catfish, skate, salmon, turbot, butterfly fish), focusing on the variety of body shapes
  • July 5: Marker + watercolor landscape. A duo of orange catfish soaring over a small mountain village.
  • July 6: Watercolor. BPW fish & jellyfish swimming in a starry turquoise sky.
  • July 7: Weekly meeting pen sketch. A fish with roses & leaves.
  • July 8: Watercolor landscape. Grassy field, upside-down tree with white blossoms, distant birds in the sky.
  • July 9-10: Colorful googly-eyed fish in pen + watercolor + crayon.
  • July 11: Watercolor. Atmospheric landscape based on a LMA tutorial. Brilliant pink sunset, trees at the horizon line, water below, and grassy banks.
  • July 12: Watercolor rendition of Pink Green Tree (#2). This one hews closer to the original; it’s painted edge-to-edge with a pink background (rather than a muddy dusk gradient) and background green foliage in the corners.
  • July 12: Loose watercolor of koi fish (purple/mauve/orange) in a pond (indigo water, forest green kelp). Inspired by Sarah Cray’s Atmospheric Pansies.
  • July 13: Doodle blobbing during teams session. Fish, shark, eel, jellyfish in various colors. Loose watercolor wash + pen + crayon + a bit of marker.
  • July 14: Various sketches in pen (and one in marker). Fish with a ship sailing inside, a sprout blob in a house with trees outside, a large freeform fish.
  • July 15: Watercolor raindrops on a glass pane, from a LMA tutorial.
